Chapter Six

“Come now,” he said after a long silence. “Don’t tell me you have no dreams. Everyone wants something they don’t have.”

“Do you?”

“The merger and the wedding. The wedding and the merger,” he said.

“In a few weeks you’ll have those things.”

“If all goes well,” he murmured.

“Why wouldn’t it?”

He shrugged. He couldn’t tell Carolyn about his sister. About the worries that kept him awake at night that she would back out of the wedding. Talking about it with her would solve nothing. He must try to think positively. “There are loose ends,” he admitted. Loose ends—to say the least. “You didn’t answer my question. What do you want? What about marriage and a family? Wouldn’t you like to be planning your own wedding instead of those of others?”

“Yes, of course, some day. But as I explained, it’s rather hard to find Mr. Right in my line of work. And I’m not going to change jobs or move to the frozen North to find him.”

“Perhaps he’ll find you.”

She nodded but she didn’t look convinced. Instead she pulled a flyer from her back pocket. “Here’s something for you,” she said, handing it to him. On the glossy pages were photos of thatched-roof cottages on a blue-green lagoon. Smiling local women in native costume offered tropical drinks to tourists in hammocks.

“Ah,” he said. “The honeymoon. Yes, I can picture you there.” He could picture her only too well. Her shapely body clad in only a bolt of flowered material knotted at the waist. The image made his heart feel like someone had kick-started it.

“Not me,” she said. “Your sister and her husband. Is it suitable for their honeymoon? Do you think they’d like it there?”

“Would you?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Then make the reservations.”

“All right. Now I really must be getting back,” she said. This time they walked briskly and said goodbye at the door.

From her third floor window, Carolyn watched Tarik pull away in his car. She was glad she was alone at last. Every muscle in her body ached, though she wouldn’t have admitted it to him for the world. She would admit that running and talking at the same time with Tarik had been invigorating and not as hard as she’d imagined. She’d been keyed up, adrenaline flowing, enjoying the fresh air, the beautiful views across the bay and yes, watching Tarik run so smoothly, so effortlessly. But that was then, this was now. She glanced across the room and saw his forgotten sweater. She groaned. How could she have neglected to give it to him?

She could have avoided this whole encounter if only she hadn’t made up the story about going out for a run. By doing so she’d found out more about Tarik—more than she’d wanted to know. She had to admit he was an amazing person. When she heard him say he’d run cross-country at college she couldn’t believe it. It was too late to say she was off to play basketball instead. Knowing him, he’d probably played basketball in his former life as well.
